Investigation on Foundation Depth of Five-Pagoda Temple, Beijing

1.Objectives

Use the GD-10 ERT electrical instrument to investigate the foundation near a temple. Use the 2D ERT profile method for the profile and surface of the tower and surroundings.. As the ERT method explores the relatively shallow depth,  and have a high definition, it can detect the substrate interface and depth by observing the resistivity of the change interface.

2. the test process:

Six ERT measuring lines are laid for the test and the wenner α array is applied. The electrode spacing is 1m and there are 48 channels in total.

  • The test electrode is the use of material water conductivity, without drilling.

3.Analysis of test results

The data is processed by the res2dinv inversion software

1) Interpretation of results

The surface of the measuring line is generally of high resistivity to reflect the base of the building. From measuring lines 1 to 6 and the high-resistivity conversion zone 0 to 1.2m deep of the surface, it can be concluded that the non-conductivity of the building structure’s stone materials lead to the rated high-resistivity reaction. The stable layer is often put beneath the basal layer before the building construction. In the ERT resistivity profile, there is an obvious horizontal boundary between the high and low resistivity at 1.5 m and it can be deduced that the boundary is the target building base of the investigation.

The above figure shows that the geologic structure distribution is very clear on the section under test. The orange-red area (see the specific legend) at the top of the figure is a layer of high-resistivity material that can be initially determined as the foundations of the Wuta Temple , Through further testing and analysis to come to the concrete foundation depth.

This figure shows that the distribution of the geological structure is very clear on the section under test. The orange-red area at the top of the figure (see the specific legend) is a layer of high-resistivity material that can be tentatively determined to be the foundation of the Wuta Temple, Through further testing and analysis, we can get the concrete foundation depth.
